Honeyrose News
We hope to bring you interesting news about Honeyrose Bakery, both big (to us) and small, as well as information on events and issues that we think you should hear about:
House & Garden features a Honeyrose cake for Duchy
That's quite a mouthful, but what we meant is that iconic style magazine "House & Garden" in their December 2011 edition has one of our cakes, which we made for Duchy Originals, profiled as one of their choices for Christmas. It is fit for a (future) King indeed. The article is here.
HRH Duke of York finally gets to meet Lise
Well, or maybe it was the other way around. Details. The point being Lise Madsen, our MD & Founder, was invited to a private business luncheon hosted by a local Park Royal business in conjunction with the Park Royal Partnership where 12 company MD's were invited, including Lise. They were told there would be an unnamed VIP attending to discuss the state of small businesses. On arrival, Lise was pleasantly surprised to find out it was HRH Duke of York, who was interested, engaged, with good insights and questions.
Honeyrose Toffee & Apple Cake for Good To Go is Waitrose top pick for October 2011
We think it's very good, but it's even nicer when your customer thinks so and gives it a shout out. Our Toffee & Apple Cake for the Waitrose Good To Go range is their October pick of the month, see it here.
Ohnoyoudidn' !
Think of your blood pressure, think of your blood pressure, remember what the doctor said. Deep calming breaths. Ok. Good. Sorry to get all militant but when we see porkies spread in the trade press by someone who definitely should know better (Google him - he used to be the voice of organic in the vortex of government power, oy vey), well we gotta take a stand. So we did. Read on here and online here.
Honeyrose is Good To Go, for Waitrose
One of the things that has kept us very busy this year is becoming certified, and starting production, as a trusted own-label producer for Waitrose. The first two products we are doing them will be in their Good To Go range. Having worked closely with them for over a year, we can attest to their dedication, caring, and well, overall plain decency of the Waitrose team as a whole - a foodie's delight. See here more info on our lovely Blondie and Toffee Apple Cake
Don't Panic it's Organic. Carry On.
Great quality is sought after. Amazing tasting cakes that you want to have another bite of - ditto. People are smart. Consumers do care. Everyone agrees that chemicals in the food chain is not a great thing. Relax, deep breathes, and spread the natural love, ideally organic. We tried to put that in a letter to The Grocer in Sept 2011.
Honeyrose fit for a (future) King
We have proudly been selected again to make special Christmas cakes for Duchy Originals from Waitrose this year. They should be available starting in October 201, both as a 900g large Christmas Cake, as well as a Mini Christmas Cake wrapped for impulse buy while at the till. They are beautifully matured and hand-decorated with open fruit topping. Heston, we'll hope to match your success last year ! More on those cakes here.
Lise Madsen of Honeyrose in Business Leaders Roundtable Debate (Food Manufacture)
Lise was proud to represent! Honeyrose, and her MD sisterhood (out of 20 MD's, she was the sole woman), when she was asked onto the Business Leaders Roundtable Debate held on Jan 18, 2011 in London. Several topics were covered, interesting debate, for highlights see the online article.
Honeyrose in Marketing Week, Jan 13, 2011
Adrian's head is not really that enormous as in the article pictures. Ok maybe it is but nothing a haircut and a year in the gym can't fix. But we digress, as that aside, he spouted pure organic wisdom, by the kind invitation of Marketing Week magazine, on a panel discussion on how consumer attitudes may have change because of and after the recession. See the online article or download a pdf.
Honeyrose spotted on I-85 in South Carolina
We have received confirmed reports of a Honeyrose Date & Walnut bar being consumed - while driving - somewhere between Spartanburg and Greenville on I-85 in the great state of South Carolina. Thanks to Peter for sending that in and not crashing while driving, unwrapping, eating and photographing - good man.
Honeyrose Bakery gets a nice compliment from Bryan Adams the Rock God
Bryan Adams kindly gave us a nice tweet on Dec 24, 2010 on his twitter account as he liked a cake he asked us to make for him. We met him a few years ago and he's one of those guys you wish you could hate, but can't, because he's, well, nice, modest, down to earth and way too talented. Everything we do, we do it for you :-) Yes, we'll stick to baking.
Honeyrose Bakery article in the FInancial Times, Nov. 20-21, 2010
The FT, wow ! Yes, the FT ran a very nice article on the question of whether" small companies can compete with big players without succumbing to expansion ?", and interviewed our MD & Founder, Lise Madsen. The article appeared in the Money section of the FT on the weekend of November 20, 2010. We had fun trying to find the perfect pose for their perfectionist photographer, but got there in the end.
Honeyrose Bakery MD Lise Madsen invited as speaker to London Business School
Lise Madsen, our MD & Founder, was thankful for the opportunity to be part of a group of 6 other women to be invited for a panel discussion by London Business School's Centre for Women in Business in November 2010. It was attended by students at LBS and explored all aspects of being a successful woman in a demanding position within a company. Girl power ! (can you tell a guy wrote this blurb ?:-)
Honeyrose Bakery's Lise Madsen finalist at Food Manufacture's "Personality of the Year 2010" Award
We're not recycling the blurb mentioned about 10 blurbs below. This was the actual night of the awards...we put on our finest gown....managed to barely squeeze into our tux....and boldly scootered over to attend the awards dinner at the newly refurbished Savoy Hotel in London. Cutting to the chase, we did not win :-/ But it is true, as the saying goes, "it's an honour just to be nominated". It was a fun night, met some interesting people at the dinner, and got to see our name "up there" for a moment :-).
Honeyrose Bakery visited by India and Denmark business students
One of the nice things that we get to do is give tours of our company to schools, from primary schools to business schools. In October 2010 we hosted 6 students from IMM in New Delhi, with lots of good questions for Lise on what it's like to be an entrepreneur. In November we had 20 students from Fredericia Handelsgymnasium, curious about what it is like to run a small business in the UK.
Honeyrose founder Lise Madsen profiled in Denmark's leading newspaper Jyllands-Postens
We were very pleased when we were approached by Denmark's leading newspaper, Jyllands-Postens, wanting to do a profile on our founder Lise. The article was published in their September 15, 2010 edition, in a 2 page spread in their business section. The article is here, with translation into English below the actual article. Scary picture, but very good article, we thought.
Honeyrose Gold Award 2010 winners on display in London
Our lovely Gold Award winners at the Great Taste Awards 2010 were on display at Speciality Fine Food Fair in early September at London's Olympia. Here's a picture of the stand that held the award winners, and here are our two lovely winners, step up sweet Organic Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Icing and moist Organic Orange Madeira Loaf Cake.
Honeyrose is organic, and producing organic is tough but worth it, especially for our customers
That's one way to summarise how we feel about the recent article that appeared in July's British Baker suggesting organic certification should be more lax. We disagree, and responded in a Letter to the Editor, which they were kind enough to print it in August. Here's our letter. Oh no you didn' !
Honeyrose wins a further 2 Gold Awards at the 2010 Great Taste Awards
We are delighted to have won 2 Gold Awards at the 2010 Great Taste Awards, for our Organic Carrot Cake with Cream Cheeses Icing, and for our Organic Orange Madeira Loaf Cake. A record number of products were entered, and judging was tightened with every product awarded gold being sampled by at least 16 judges. Hooray for Honeyrose ! And by the way, that now brings us to 15 Great Taste Awards won since we started. Can we get an Amen ?!
Honeyrose is "Best of British" Producer, notes Whole Foods
We were pleased as punch that Whole Foods has taken the time to single Honeyrose out as one of their special suppliers. We have proudly been supplying them with our organic treats for years, and they reminded us that two nice things about us are that we are "Best of British" and Founder/Owner run. Here's the poster up in their stores.

Honeyrose has proof that consumers still love and value organic food
The benefits of organic foods have been taking a beating this past year in the press; we're not quite sure why - probably the recessionary pendulum swinging too far - but after seeing article after article with unfair, incorrect, or plainly false information, we decided we had had enough and came out fighting. Well, if by "fighting" we all understand that to mean "writing letters with real analysis from actual data". Kapow, bash, and bang !
Honeyrose has ethical cakes says Ethical Living magazine
Ethical Living magazine was nice enough to highlight our Honeyrose Almond Orange Loaf Cake. The blurb also mentions it is a good choice if you can't eat wheat. Polenta lovers of the world, unite. Click here for the blurb.
Honeyrose in Zest magazine "Best for an Organic Option"
As the cover of the April 2010 issue of Zest shows, what is blonde, gorgeous, tanned and very healthy ? Why our Honeyrose Organic Banana and Walnut Loaf Cake, that they voted "Best for an Organic Option". We concur, and here's the article.
Honeyrose Gluten-Free cakes and brownies launching in Sainsbury's
The smart folks at Sainsbury's decided their gluten-free customers deserved the chance to eat lovely, moist, delicious cakes instead of the, well, reformulated sawdust that was generally passed off as a gluten-free cake. We worked hard to come up with cakes that beat their expectations, and are happy to have given birth to a tasty triplet of gluten-free cakes: Organic Walnut Brownies, Organic Carrot Cake, and Organic Banana Cake, all gluten-free, from Honeyrose, and available at your local Sainsbury's. Eat them up, don't worry, we're baking more as we write this. Our taaa-daaaaa here
Honeyrose awarded BRC Grade A Quality Accreditation
This is a big deal for us, and if you are in the food world as a supplier you will appreciate it even more. Our bakery has been awarded BRC Grade A accreditation. It was simple really - all it took was 3 years of effort and planning as we built a bespoke bakery, designed it to BRC global standards, made sure all our training, systems and processes aligned to BRC global standards, then underwent a detailed 3 day audit. We have the grey hairs to prove it, apart from the lovely accreditation. Well worth it, and all for you, dear customers. More on this in our press release, and in this snippet.
Honeyrose acquires Greenwich Cakes Ltd. assets
Taking a big step in our growth, Honeyrose bought the assets of Greenwich Cakes Ltd. it was an opportunity that we could not pass up and even though the economy is in the midst of a recession, our eye is on the future and how to grow. We needed the assets, including production and office equipment to meet
the demand of our current clients, and in preparation for our planned growth in several area. Read more about it in this Sep09 article from British Baker.

Business Students from india and Denmark visit Honeyrose
Business students from India and Denmark came by Honeyrose this summer, to learn how a small business gets started and grows. The tours were led by MD Lise Madsen; the most interesting part were the Q&A session at the end as the budding entrepreneurs got to drill us on theory versus practice. It was a good time, and hopefully the sharing of experience helped inspire a future go-getter. One group of 10 students came in August from New Delhi, India from the Indian Institute of Marketing and Management . The other group of 23 students came from the International Business College, in Kolding, Denmark.
Honeyrose launches an organic cake range especially for Kids
This is dear to our hearts as we have wanted to do this for a long time, and we had a lot of fun coming up with ideas that kids would like - well, our kids like them, and we hope yours do to. Honeyrose launches at Selfridges & Co !
We thought it was perfect serendipity that Selfridges, the iconic London premium department store is both celebrating this year it's 100 anniversary - as well as launching multiple Honeyrose lines in it's lovely Foodhall. Honeyrose only uses biodegradable film in it's packaging
And just to make it official, here's a press release from the nice folks at National Flexible, that supply us with our biodegradable film. We actually have been using it for a couple of years - life is too short, and even though it costs twice as much as regular (non-biodegradable film) we went ahead, and did not pass on that cost.

Fine Food Digest has a nice little blurb on us mentioning that we only use biodegradable film in all of our pre-packed organic cakes, and that we have a wide range of Free-From cakes that are also organic.
Honeyrose mourns the passing of mentor and renowned pastry chef Gaston Lenotre
We were saddened to read of the passing of Gaston Lenotre - read his excellent obituary from the FT - in early January 2009. Our founder and MD, Lise, apprenticed under Gaston in Paris in the mid-Eighties, then he selected her to wok on his management team. He was loved by his students, who quaked in their pastry chef hats if he thought they weren't doing as well as he expected. He taught Honeyrose to focus on quality and taste above all. Adieu, M. Lenotre.
Honeyrose in Sandwich & Snack News
We were chuffed to bits to see that one of our loyal customers, Reynolds Sandwich Bar and Cafe of W1 London had mentioned our good relationship and how we helped them drive their sales with our organic cakes. Hats off to Ben, he has some great, honest points in the article from December 2008.
Organic Food Makes the Male DingDong Bigger

Honeyrose's biodegradable packaging raises interest
A while back we switched all our flow wrapping to biodegradable film. Little old us took a large chunk of a whole factory's production of biodegradable film. It increased our packaging costs by 100%, and we absorbed it (did not pass it on in our pricing). And now you can read more about it in Out Of Home Magazine's November 2008 case study.

Ok so maybe we are making lemonade when it's raining lemons, but still...we entered the "Bakery Food Manufacturer of the Year" category at the Baking Industry Awards 2008. We were amazed, that out of a field of close to nearly 30 companies entering that category, we made the shortlist. And then were ecstatic to make it further as 1 of 3 finalists. Considering the other 2 finalists were pasty companies at least 5 times our size, we are very happy. Hooray, we won the Finalist Award !
